Chapter 33
CHLOE
I pulled myself to my feet and did my best to step around the pile of dead zombies. None of them were going to come back from those mortal wounds. Each of them had a received a shot to the head.
Daniel seemed to study me for a moment. “You hurt?”
“No more than before.” I stepped in a bloody pool of gray matter. My shoes made a squelching sound. I looked down. That was a mistake. “Ew.” I wanted to throw up again.
Cavanaugh reached through the bars to slide his keycard through the cage lock. The lock buzzed. He pushed the gate open and walked out. As he eyed Daniel, he obviously yearned for the pistol that had been taken from him. “You should have let them take Harmon down,” he told Drood. “If you had, we’d still be in control.”
Drood leaned against the bars to scramble to his feet. He cradled his useless arm and said nothing.
“Who pays your salary? You belong in the cage with that ape,” Cavanaugh taunted him. “You’re probably almost as smart.”
Drood cursed his boss. Cavanaugh just laughed. That’s when I realized I should always have been afraid of Cavanaugh. I shouldn’t have dumped that bottle of wine down his pants and embarrassed him. When his bodyguard cursed him viciously, the arms dealer might as well have been a wall. He felt nothing for the man. Cavanaugh was a rich man who would never be affected by criticism, hate, compassion or love.
“See, this is what happens when a bunch of psychopaths work together,” Daniel said.
“You supply both sides,” Drood told his boss. “If you expect to survive this, I think you’re going to have to choose a side. I just did.”
“And look how that worked out.” Cavanaugh closed the gate behind him, locking Drood in the cage.
“What are you doing? I need medical attention.”
“You wouldn’t need it if you hadn’t taken my gun.”
“I was trying to protect you. We’ve got a clear exit thanks to me. You’ve never thanked me for anything, come to think of it.”
“I’m their prisoner now, Drood. We’ve lost the initiative, you useless moron.”
Drood looked back and forth from Daniel to me. “Careful of that one. Wealthy people live in our world but they aren’t of our world. Total autonomy, total power. Mr. Cavanaugh travels around the world and, with private jets, he never even has to show anyone his passport. The wealthy aren’t like you and me.”
“That’s right,” Cavanaugh said. “We have money.”
“When’s the last time you had to stand in line for anything, boss?”
“You’re all messed up, Drood. What use are you to me now? What will I pay you for? You might make a good doorstop.”
Drood cursed his boss again.
“Gentlemen,” I said, “time is short. Daniel, put Cavanaugh back in the cage, please.”
“You sure?” Daniel asked.
“After what he allowed to happen to that woman? He’s more monster than the monsters. Drood is injured but he can walk. Show us to the nanite labs.”
“No! Wait! You need me,” Cavanaugh said.
